The Airport Cafe and Lounge doesn't serve airline food

For anyone who ever listens to the radio, you may recall the Airport Cafe and Lounge jingle that always comes on to every local station. Well, I finally decided to see if the food and service really lived up to the song.

Located in the terminal building of the Aberdeen Regional Airport, the Airport Cafe and Lounge seems to be your average cafe with a lounge located separately just up a flight of stairs. The first thing that caught my eye upon entering is the view of the landing strip. Granted, there was not much traffic during our meal, but we did get to see a plane take off and another land while dining. That is something you won’t likely catch at another eating spot here in town.

We were greeted quickly by our waitress who gave us our menus and recited the specials. The food consists of your normal cafe food. A bunch of breakfast specials, burgers, fries and most other “working man meals, ” as the menu informs you. My guest decided on the au jus (a roast beef sandwich with au jus dip) and a salad. I went with the club sandwich and the vegetable beef soup.

While we waited for our food, we tried to hold a conversation, but there was repair work being done on the runway so it was kind of hard to speak to one another. The food did arrive quickly so it wasn’t too big of a bother, but the meal would have been a little nicer without the outside distraction.

My guest loved her au jus and commented on how tender the roast beef was despite finding a small amount of fat on the sandwich. She was also surprised that her salad consisted of more than just lettuce as she thought it would have.

I was also quite surprised with my meal. I was expecting a simple club sandwich but received a double layered toasted club sandwich. The first layer was chicken with a light layer of sauce followed by a layer of bacon and tomatoes sliced into four and held together by little swords. It was rather good, although I am not sure how good for me. The soup was also quite good and surprisingly hearty.

The check came to about $15 with the tip. Not much when comparing the price tag to a meal at the Home Place, but more than I expected for a cafe.

I would have no problem eating at the Airport Cafe and Lounge if it weren’t for the location. I am taking a flight in a few weeks so I might stop by and have a bite to eat. If you are in need of a change for lunch, or you just happen to be coming into town from the east, stop by and give it a try. If not, don’t worry about it; you aren’t missing anything too special except a nice view while you eat.
